DeMbare hopeful of recovery

The Harare giants failed to close the gap on log leaders Ngezi Platinum Stars after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Herentals at the National Sports Stadium.

DYNAMOS coach Genesis Mangombe believes his charges will recover from their recent slump to fight for the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title.

The Harare giants failed to close the gap on log leaders Ngezi Platinum Stars after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Herentals at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.

A Frank Makarati first half own goal saw DeMbare stumble for the second time inside a week after they were held to a goalless draw at Triangle on Thursday.

Victory over the Students would have seen Mangombe's men capitalise on Ngezi Platinum Stars' defeat to FC Platinum on Saturday,

An eleven-point gap separates the two teams going into the last eight rounds of matches, although Dynamos might be awarded three points from their abandoned match against Highlanders.

More worrying for the club's supporters is the superb form the defending champions FC Platinum have gained.

Their 1-0 win over Ngezi was their fifth straight win as they glided up the ladder to second position on the log table with 46 points, five behind fellow platinum miners.

Mangombe was left to rue the numerous opportunities his men missed in the last two matches.

Asked if his players have the right character to sustain the championship fight, Mangombe responded: "It's one area we need to work on especially at training but I don't doubt my players’ abilities and character. We have players who are experienced enough, some of whom have won the league title before.

"The big problem is that we struggle against the small teams because against big teams we play well and even score. It's these struggling teams that give us problems. We need to change that as we move forward so that we can try to pick points against these struggling teams."

Dynamos strikers have fired blanks in the last two matches, but Mangombe says he is not losing sleep over it.

"We are not worried much about it. We are going to physche up the boys and tell them that we still have a chance to fight for the championship. The good thing is that the boys are playing possessional football and we are creating enough chances. Entries into the opposition box have improved, but we need to be clinical at the end of the day," he said.

DeMbare's next match is a tough away trip to Manica Diamonds at Gibbo Stadium on Saturday. Failure to pick maximum points in this one could effectively extinguish the title hopes.

While Dynamos are struggling, their title rivals have picked form at the right moment.
