BULAWAYO City Council is no longer going to install smart water meters amid indications that they are very expensive.

Town clerk Christopher Dube recently revealed that residents were against the installation of smart meters.

According to the latest council minutes, proper smart meters which last longer are manufactured in Italy and are expensive.

Dube said it was expensive to maintain the infrastructure and it would be costly to service.

“Council had done a mini-survey with other local authorities which implemented smart meters and feedback from one of them indicated that the project did not yield good results,” the minutes read.

Reached for comment pertaining to the issue, council corporate communications officer Bongiwe Ngwenya promised to revert to us as soon as possible.

Bulawayo has been facing a perennial water crisis which forced government to intervene in a bid to find a lasting solution to the challenges faced by the city.

Media reports in July this year indicated that deputy mayor Edwin Ndlovu proposed the adoption of smart water meters following complaints from consumers about high water bills.
