Firms pollute city streams

Local
According to the latest council report on the sewerage section, some streams had turned into a dark colour due to industrial waste dumped into them.

The Bulawayo City Council is clamping down on companies that are illegally discharging raw effluent into rivers and streams, a practice that is exposing residents to waterborne diseases.

According to the latest council report on the sewerage section, some streams had turned into a dark colour due to industrial waste dumped into them.

Bulawayo mayor David Coltart wanted to know if the industries discharging effluent into the streams had been identified and penalised, the report says.

In response, the Water Engineering section indicated that companies polluting the streams were known to council and they were facing sanction.

" A report to the Environmental Management Agency had been submitted with regards to the leach pad at Ncema," read the minutes.
