Hwange council rehabilitates roads

Local
HLB director of engineering Ndabezinhle Twala said the local authority is targeting two major roads for rehabilitation using its allocation from the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara).

The Hwange Local Board (HLB) has started rehabilitating roads in the coal-mining town.

HLB director of engineering Ndabezinhle Twala said the local authority is targeting two major roads for rehabilitation using its allocation from the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara).

"We are also working on drain lining,” Twala said.

"We realised that if we don't work on our drainage our roads will experience erosion, landslides, and collapse due to weakened foundations or washed-out embankments.

“A road is as good as its drainage.”

The road network in Hwange is poor, with coal mining companies blamed for the damage.

Twala said the local authority also plans to resurface Sawaga and Derby Loop roads, which lead to the town’s industrial area

"Overall, our roads are fairly trafficable, but we are seeking to improve them especially in areas which are prone to floods, that's why we are looking at protecting our riding surface by concentrating on drain structures," he said.

“We prioritised rehabilitating Derby Loop Road as it is one of our strategic roads...”
