BULAWAYO City Council will soon auction abandoned, unclaimed and confiscated items including vehicles as it intensifies efforts to raise more income to tackle service delivery challenges.
According to latest council minutes, the town planning department has sought authority to auction abandoned, unclaimed vehicles and confiscated items in council’s custody.
The council has since appointed an external auctioneer Glow Track (Pvt) Limited which has already auctioned some council-owned vehicles.
“The unclaimed and abandoned vehicles and confiscated items were ready for auctioning. All statutory provisions had been complied with,” read the minutes.
In the past, council through the valuation section, auctioned non-council-owned items.
However, due to the tight commitments by the section, council opted to assign the job to an external auctioneer.
“Some of the advantages of assigning the external auctioneer were that the Valuation Section would continue focusing on the general revaluation exercise and other key result areas. Council stood to benefit from income in US dollars as what was the case with the auction of Council vehicles,” the minutes read.
The abandoned and impounded vehicles and items include Honda Fit and Mazda Demio models, old vehicle scraps, wheelbarrows, axes and push carts.
