Embrace wellness matters, industry leaders urged

This comes at a time when mental health, social re-engineering and psychological support remain limited areas for concern in some Zimbabwean corporates and Africa at large.

A GLOBAL resource hub for matters pertaining to wellness, Wellness Institute of Zimbabwe (WIZ), has encouraged industry leaders to embrace wellness programmes among their employees as it helps in improving production.

This comes at a time when mental health, social re-engineering and psychological support remain limited areas for concern in some Zimbabwean corporates and Africa at large.

Addressing journalists in Harare this week, WIZ administrator Ropafadzo Gloria Sibanda said there was  need to foster commitment from leaders in organisations to embrace wellness matters.

“It is high time organisations realised that wellness is not solitary, but a virtuous cycle that transforms lives beyond the cubicle. Wellness impacts on the performance of employees,” she said.

“Health in the workplace goes beyond the absence of illness. It encompasses mental well-being, ergonomic practices and a culture that promotes a balance between work and life. A healthy workplace is the backbone of a thriving organisation.”

Sibanda said an average adult had some economic-related engagements, including work, which may lead to work-related stresses, fatigue and work-life balance.

“Employees are affected socially, financially, emotionally, physically, intellectually and these areas remain neglected in the workspace, yet they have proven to affect the productivity of employees.

“Everyday we step into our workplaces with a responsibility, a responsibility to return home in good condition (emotionally, physically, financially and even spiritually).

“Responsibility is a collective effort that begins with leaders and extends to the entire organisation,” she said.

WIZ is a global resource hub for matters pertaining to Wellness Occupation Health, Safety, Environment and Quality.

It aims to positively influence thought leadership in wellness matters by promoting policy design, systems implementation, culture management, compliance and strategy design benchmarking.

The organisation is expected to host its annual wellness conference next month running under the theme Reimagining and Shaping the Future of Wellness in the Workplace in Vumba.
