THE community in Nyamhunga, Kariba, was plunged into mourning when a Grade 7 primary school learner was on Sunday this week crushed to death by a reversing truck while playing with his friends in the resort town.
The learner, Male Respect Jandura, died on the spot and his body was taken to Kariba District Hospital for a post-mortem.
Nyamhunga Primary School head Bridget Masocha confirmed the incident describing the death as unfortunate and a loss both to the family and school.
“With a heavy heart, it is my sad duty to announce the passing of one of our pupils, Male Respect, a prefect from Grade 7A. This news is devastating, and we mourn the loss of a bright and promising young life.
“Male was an exceptional student and a dedicated prefect who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and classmates during this difficult time,” she said.
A witness told NewsDay that the children were clinging to the truck while it was taking off after offloading.
“The boy fell down and in the process the truck reversed, crushing the learner to death. The driver did not notice what had happened until after his return with another load,” the witness said.
This is not the first time, a similar accident claimed the life of a truck driver who was crushed to death at Nyamhunga shopping centre while lying under a truck fixing its breaks.
