Simuka Comedy launches new initiative

The launch event is scheduled for October 26 at The Yard Bar, Long Chen Plaza in Harare.

Simuka Comedy, a leading comedy management company says it is launching a new initiative titled Simuka Comedy Nights: Showcasing Young Talent. The initiative aims to provide a platform for aspiring comedians to showcase their skills and gain valuable experience.

The launch event is scheduled for October 26 at The Yard Bar, Long Chen Plaza in Harare.

Hillary Chikambi, the business development manager for Simuka Comedy and manager to Doc Vikela (pictured), emphasised the importance of this initiative in supporting young comedians. “We want to create a space where these talented individuals can hone their craft, gain confidence, and connect with audiences,” he said.

"The initiative is set to launch on October 26 at The Yard Bar, Long Chen Plaza and we are aiming to host regular stand-up comedy nights that allow young and upcoming artists to take the stage, thereby gaining exposure and experience in front of an audience.”

The new initiative will greatly benefit the participants by offering them a stage to perform regularly.

“It will help them hone their craft, build confidence, connect with the audience and gain valuable performance experience,” said Chikambi.

“Additionally, they will have the chance to network with other comedians and industry professionals, which can lead them to further opportunities in their careers.”

The Simuka Comedy manager said they were planning to monetise the new initiative through tickets sales for the comedy nights and also as well as potential sponsorship deals.

“We will also explore options for merchandise sales related to the shows and securing partnerships with media outlets for promotion and coverage, which can generate additional revenue,” he said.

Chikambi said from previous sessions the Simuka Comedy have hosted they have observed positive outcomes, including increased audience.

“From our previous sessions, we have observed positive outcomes including increased attendance, enthusiastic audience engagement and a noticeable improvement in the performer’s skills,” Chikambi said.

“Many comedians reported that performing in front of live audiences helped them refine their material and delivery leading to improved confidence and stage presence.”

Chikambi said as a manager in the standup comedy scene, he is optimistic about the upward trajectory of Zimbabwean comedy fueled with fresh talent and innovative voices.

“Young comedians are uniquely blending traditional themes with contemporary issues, resonating with audiences both locally and internationally.

“The growth of comedy festivals and digital platforms has expanded their reach and recognition, creating an environment ripe for collaboration between seasoned and emerging acts.

“With continued support and investment, the future holds limitless potential for these young performers and l am excited to witness the extraordinary heights they can achieve.”

Chikambi said in addition to the regular stand –up nights they are looking to implement several other initiatives such as workshops and mentorship programmes.

“We also aim to create an online platform for comedians to share their work and connect with fans, as well as host comedy festivals that celebrate local talent and provide more exposure for comedians in our society.”
