Gweru-based professional golfer Liberty Gumisa has lauded leading indigenous fuel company Glow Petroleum for enabling him to enjoy the best year of his career.
Gumisa is currently in Ghana where he has played in three tournaments including the Asante Open, Ghana Open and Accra Open; and managed to make the cut in two of the three events.
The professional golfer from Midlands was supposed to have played in the 2024 Genser PGA Championship which is currently underway in the West African country at the Celebrity Golf Club in Sakumono, Ghana but missed out due to a technicality.
“I don't know how to thank my sponsor Glow Petroleum because their support has been incredible. I am grateful for their kindness and so priviledged to be associated with a great brand as Glow Petroleum. They have given me everything I need to make sure I participate in every tournament in Zimbabwe and beyond board,” he told this publublication from Sakumono Ghana.
“They have taught me to love people and give back to the community which is why I do the junior programmes and work with people living with disability. They made me someone who is respected and recognized because we have been together and have completely changed my life and I can’t ask for me. I owe all my success to Glow Petroleum and I am happy that this year I managed to reward them with good performance,” Gumisa added.
Glow Petroleum have been sponsoring Gumisa, who turned pro in 2017, since 2019 and have helped him to become one of the top professional golfers in the country.
Gumisa reflected on his trip in Ghana where he has played in three different tournaments in the past one month.
“I am currently in Ghana and I have played three tournaments such as the Asante Open which is organized by the King in Kumasi and I was invited after my top 5 finish in Gabon. I also played the Ghana Open and Accra Open at Achimota Golf Club.

“I am so happy with my game; my game is improving on a daily basis. I am learning and more. After playing so many tournaments I am learning to be patient and to understand myself better and the technique of the game: where to attack, where to play soft and where to go for everything.
“Playing more tournaments has helped me a lot and I have had a chance to play more with professionals from around the World whereby you learn from others and get advice. And also, you play different courses like in Kumasi the course is hard, the weather is so hot in the first tournament I struggle a little bit because of the change of the weather but it was a good experience
“When I came to Ghana my target was to make the cut in all the tournaments because when you make the cut you relieve yourself from a lot of pressure. I wanted to make cuts and then challenge for the title and I managed to do that and I am so happy. I missed one cut in all the three tournaments,” he said.
Gumisa failed to make the cut in the Asante Open before settling for 16th and 21st in the Ghana Open and Accra Open respectively.
While he is happy with what he has already achieved this season Gumisa is set to play in the Ngoda Pro Invitation at Country Club in Harare before finishing the year in Kenya.
“I am so happy with my achievements this year. I can say this is easily my best year since I turned Pro because I have managed to achieve a lot. I managed pop 10 at Lowveld ProAm in Triangle, top 10 finish in NAC tournament and top five finish at Libreville Open in Gabon.
“I managed to play in two Sunshine Tour tournaments this year which is amazing. I didn’t make the cut but it was a huge achievement in my career. I played at the FBC Zim Open and Mopani Open in Zambia. I also did well in the Ghana Open and Accra Open,” the Gokwe-born golfer said.
The golfer managed to complete a PGA Level 1 coaching certificate this year while he leads a flourishing junior golf project in Midlands as well as working with children living with disabilities specifically from St Daniels Rehabilitation Center, teaching them the sport.
Gumisa is married to Beatrice and the couple has three children.
