Zim names squad for Celtic Cup tournament

It took a near run-a-ball 27-run intervention by skipper Raza to rebuild the innings.

ZIMBABWE has announced the senior women netball team which is going to participate in an inaugural four-nation tournament known as the Celtic Cup to be hosted in Glasgow, Scotland, early next month.

The Gems will compete against Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland in the tournament scheduled to run from November 7 to 10 at the Emirates Arena.

The tournament was created by the three European countries to provide the best competitive tournament for athletes and spectators outside the World Cup and the Commonwealth Games.

But for the Gems, it is an opportunity to enhance the team`s strength, strategy and team work as they prepare for the qualifiers of the 2027 World Cup, which will be held in Australia.

The 15-man team which was unveiled at the Cresta Jameson Hotel yesterday consists of senior players and two young players from the Under-21s as well as four team officials.

Speaking at the team unveiling ceremony, Zimbabwe Netball Association president Leticia Chipandu paid tribute to the team sponsors Nedbank Zimbabwe.

“I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our title sponsor, Nedbank Zimbabwe. Your unwavering support has not only made this journey possible but has also inspired our players to dream bigger and work harder. You have invested in the future of Zimbabwean netball, and for that, we are truly grateful,” she said.

“I also want to express our deep appreciation to the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee, and the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation.

"Your guidance, encouragement, and support have been crucial in making this campaign a reality. We thank you for standing with us, for promoting the growth of netball, and for always believing in the potential of Zimbabwean athletes.”

She added: “To our coaches and technical staff, I extend my heartfelt thanks for your dedication and hard work. You have prepared the team exceptionally well, and I know your guidance will continue to inspire our players on this journey.

“As we head to Scotland, remember that this is more than a tournament: it is about building a legacy and making a statement that Zimbabwean netball is rising, and The Gems are ready to shine.”
