Gweru-based golfer Lloyd Dube bagged his second amateur title of the year after scooping the 2024 edition of the Simon V Muzenda Golf Championship on home turf, Gweru Golf Club last week.
Dube shot rounds of 74 76 and 82 for a 232 gross total along to tie with Notice Gono but eventually won after a playoff.
Gono shot 80 77 and 75 in three rounds and was unlucky not to have runaway with the title
“Winning the S V Muzenda Amateur Championship made me feel great and pleased bcz it was one of target to have a home win on a national level. I was confident that had a chance to win because I was playing at home where I had the home advantage the support of the crowd and the weather conditions of that week was on my side because it was extremely cold,” he told Golf Zone.
Dube set himself a target of three wins on the local amateur circuit and is now one shy of achieving the goal with a few tournaments remaining before the year closes.
“I was pleased with my second win this year after Masvingo Amateur because after Masvingo Amateur my performance was low and I think after my second win of the year it will help me regain my confidence again
“My targets in the beginning of the year was to win at least three national tournaments and I have achieved two before end of the season. I think it’s possible to achieve my target bcz we still have more than four events to complete the season," he said.
The 21-year-old golfer defended his Masvingo Amateur Golf Tournament title with a level par score after three rounds at Masvingo Golf Club in April.
Dube carded 71 73 and 72 for a gross total of 216 and was 10 strokes ahead of his nearest rival Tafadzwa Ndaruza who managed 75 79 and 72 in the two day tournament.
Kelvin Muchenje finished in third place, one shot behind Ndaruza.
