Teenage golf star Miriam Masiya claimed the biggest win of her amateur golf career after bagging the National Aids Council sponsored Zimbabwe Ladies Amateur Open on Sunday.
The 15–year–old prodigy, who represented the country with distinction in regional and international competitions, carded scores of 78, 75 and 79 over the three rounds of stroke play.
Zarina Makwarimba and Letwin Ncube were second and third respectively.
The A Division title went to Momo Mlalazi while Chochorayi Chagweda was crowned champion for the B division. At least 128 golfers including 10 from Zambia and one from South Africa took part in the 2024 edition of the event hosted at Chapman Golf Club in Harare.
The annual event featured all the leading female golfers in the country while two-time First Capital Bank Zimbabwe Junior Golf Open champion from South Africa Charlotte Millard took part in the competition. Last year, US-based golfer Margret Nyamukondiwa won the championship division but is unlikely to defend her title after she went back to school last month.
Masiya was the best junior player and the overall best player of the tournament in the Zimbabwe Ladies Amateur Open which was sponsored by National AIDS Council and other associate partners. This is the fifth year running that NAC are sponsoring the event and as has become tradition there will be free screening for cervical, prostate and breast cancer during the course of the tournament at Chapman.
Masiya started playing golf at Masvingo Golf Club under the mentorship of her father Richard, who is a renowned golf development coach in the province. After her success with the Zimbabwe junior golf team she earned a scholarship at the Heritage School in Borrowdale, where he has continued to excel on the golf course and in the classroom
