Chikwaya hungry for more US –Collegiate golf success

Golf

US-based female golf star Primross Chikwaya has set sight on winning more college golf tournaments at the University of Northwestern Ohio where she is on a golf scholarship.

Chikwaya was in the country on a break from school recently and had the pleasure of competing in the Zimbabwe Amateur championship late last month.

She was one of the four ladies who took part in the country’s premier amateur golf event along with eventual champions Margret Nyamukondiwa, Danielle Bekker and Listia Bangura.

A tough tournament saw Chikwaya finish third in the women’s competition after grossing 327 in four rounds.

But Chikwaya who won the individual title at the Lourdes Spring Invitationalin the US back in April, is eyeing more success in collegiate golf.

“Currently my dream is to win a college event. I have won a college event before but it was a one day event so I hope to win a 54 hole tournament some time because so far the best I have had is third place,” she told this publication.

Chikwaya has won two Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Women’s Golfer of the Week awards since joining the team.

She reflects on her experience in the US so far as well as her performance in the Zim Amateur.

“College golf is way tougher than here and you need a definite under par score to win a tournament. It is really crazy competition out there but it’s quite fun.

“My target (in Zim Amateur) for the four rounds was to play 8 – over or better but it didn’t work out. I feel like the course just made it tough. I kind of juggled with the greens. But it’s nice to be back home and compete with people you haven’t competed with in a long time,” she said.

Chikwaya joined Northwestern Ohio Women's Golf in January 2023 on a golf scholarship and she will also be pursuing a Business Administration degree.

She has represented Zimbabwe five times internationally with the hopes of representing again in the future.
