From the moment you lay eyes on the GWM P500, it is imposing presence commands attention. When I first saw it in the Zimoco showroom, it reminded me of the iconic American truck, the RAM.
The P500 exudes a sense of robustness and confidence. A massive chrome grille dominates the front fascia, flanked by sleek LED headlights and fog lamps that effortlessly cut through the darkness.
The towering stance and muscular lines accentuate the P500’s boxy yet contemporary silhouette, creating a visual impact that is both striking and functional.
The fixed side steps, a practical touch, ensure effortless entry and exit, while the wrap-around rear doors seamlessly integrate with the rear quarter panels, eliminating unsightly panel gaps.

Powering the GWM P500 is a choice of two formidable powertrains: a 2,4-litre turbodiesel or the innovative 2,0-litre turbo-petrol hybrid. The latter, which we had the privilege of sampling, delivers an astonishing 255kW and 648Nm of combined output, courtesy of the self-charging hybrid system — a first in Zimbabwe’s double-cab segment.
This cutting-edge hybrid technology not only enhances performance, but also contributes to improved efficiency. While the P500 may not be the most frugal option, its impressive capabilities, including a 3 500kg braked towing capacity, make it a versatile and capable companion for both on-road adventures and off-road explorations.
Capable off-road prowess
The GWM P500 isn’t just a luxurious cruiser; it’s also a formidable off-road warrior. Equipped with an intelligent all-wheel-drive system, front and rear mechanical diff locks, and a dedicated low-range mode, the P500 confidently tackles the most challenging terrains.
Despite its imposing size, the P500 boasts respectable approach and departure angles, along with a generous ground clearance of 224 mm, ensuring you can navigate rugged landscapes with ease. The longer wheelbase may slightly hinder breakover capability compared to some competitors, but the P500’s overall off-road prowess is undeniable.
Pricing and trim levels
To cater to diverse preferences and budgets, GWM offers the P500 in three distinct trim levels:
GWM P500 2.4T 9AT 4X4 Luxury: US$62 800;
GWM P500 2.4T 9AT 4X4 Super Luxury: US$68 000; and
GWM P500 2.0T HEV 9HAT 4X4 Ultra Luxury: US$80 000.
Regardless of the trim level, all P500 models come with an impressive array of standard features, including a three-year/100 000km warranty.
Driving dynamics and refinement
On the road, the GWM P500 delivers a driving experience that is both engaging and refined. The nine-speed hybrid automatic gearbox seamlessly manages the power delivery, while the intelligent all-wheel-drive system ensures optimal traction and stability in various conditions.
The P500’s suspension set-up strikes a perfect balance between comfort and control, soaking up bumps and undulations with ease, while maintaining a composed and planted demeanour. While wind noise can be slightly elevated at higher speeds, the overall NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) levels are commendable for a vehicle of this size and capability.

In addition to its impressive performance and luxury features, the GWM P500 prioritises safety and driver assistance. Advanced systems, such as lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking, provide an extra layer of protection and peace of mind on the road.
