The Jeep Grand Cherokee now has five-seater option

THE fifth-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee now has a five-seater option.

The pricing difference between the 5-seater 2-row and 7-seater "L" versions of the Jeep Grand Cherokee is just approximately US$5 000.

For the first time, Jeep provided a Grand Cherokee with three rows of seating with the arrival of the fifth-generation model in Zimbabwe last year. This model came only in the 7-seat"L" configuration.

Zimoco is about to introduce a new line of 5-seater derivatives, powered by the same 3.6-litre V6 engine and available in the same limited, overland, and summit reserve trim levels, any minute now.

Design

Viewing the 5-seat Jeep Grand Cherokee in profile or from behind at a three-quarter angle reveals a stark contrast to the 7-seat "L" version.

The overall length of this model is 292 millimetres shorter than that of the 7-seater, and the wheelbase is 127 millimeters shorter.

Some buyers may place a high premium on this feature alone if they discover the "L" does not fit into their garage or have fear when it comes to parking in tight spots.

The new 5-seat variation is also 15 mm lower than the "L" model, albeit sharing the latter's 276 mm of ground clearance. It all adds up to make the "smaller" Grand Cherokee seem more muscular and broad- shouldered than its "L" sister.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee's cabin is tastefully appointed and solidly constructed, without any annoying noises or squeaks. The Overland model has a classy but understated appearance thanks to its tasteful use of chrome and other metallic accents befitting a luxury SUV.

Front and rear LED light bars are distinctive additions to the large, shiny 20-inch wheels.

The inside is widely considered to be the pinnacle of all Jeep cabins.

The inside panels of the Grand Cherokee did not generate any rattles or squeaks despite the vehicle's movement over bumps. This Jeep seems to have been put together with care, which cannot be said of its rivals.

The extra touchscreen, located in front of the driver, is an innovative addition, and it is sure to keep teenagers occupied.

The 3,6 4x4 variant has several nice extras since they were designed with off-roading in mind. The driver may choose from many display configurations on the customizable digital instrument cluster.

The Uconnect 5 touchscreen, measuring in at an astounding 10.1 inches in diagonal, takes up much of the front fascia. The built-in Uconnect system is user-friendly and operates smoothly, and it is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wirelessly.

The touchscreen located in front of the front passenger is an unusual design choice that is sure to spark conversation anytime a new Jeep owner steps inside the vehicle for the first time. Invisible to the driver, it provides the front passenger with access to navigation information, camera views, and visual entertainment; this is sure to keep the teens occupied.

The Grand Cherokee 5-seater's interior is almost indistinguishable from the "L" model's, especially in the front. However, the decreased total body length and somewhat shorter wheelbase are readily apparent when seen from behind the vehicle.

For families that may require that, the decision is clear: spend the extra money for the "L" model, which is a true 7-seater and even gives some baggage room when the third row is filled; otherwise, if you do not need that, there is still plenty of rear passenger space and a huge luggage compartment. Jeep advertises a 1 068-litre cargo capacity.

Performance

The 3,6-litre V6 gasoline engine is normally aspirated (not turbocharged), just as it is in every other Grand Cherokee model. Diesel engines are no longer produced by Jeep.

The 210 kW (270 HP) and 344 Nm (460 lb-ft) of power and torque come from the V6 gasoline engine.

The 3,6-litre 4x4 Overland model of the Jeep Grand Cherokee is equipped with an 8-speed automatic. The engine has a classic feel, and the 8-speed automatic transmission makes the most of the power and torque it produces.

When paired with the engine, the 8-speed automatic gearbox makes quick work of any terrain.

When you rev it up and let it down, it makes a beautiful snarl. An impressive 7,9 seconds is all it takes to get from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour during takeoff. That is very impressive for such a massive device.

Naturally, the lighter a thing is, the smaller it is. The Grand Cherokee with 5 seats is noticeably lighter than the Grand Cherokee with 7 seats ("L" version). This results in reduced fuel consumption. Jeep estimates that this variant's fuel economy is 9,9 L/100 km on average.

Tech and convenience

The starting price of a 3,6 V6 44 Overland is US$115 000 including Duty and VAT, and despite its extensive list of standard features, it costs less than competing models like the Land Rover Defender 110 by at least $40 000.

uConnect 5's responsiveness and ease of use are particularly notable.

The remarkable and cutting-edge uConnect 5 infotainment system has previously been discussed. The Overland is also equipped with a high-performance audio system by McIntosh, which includes a 17-channel amplifier capable of 950W of power and 19 speakers. The system produces superb sound quality.

The front seats of the Jeep are electrically adjustable and have heating and cooling capabilities; the second-row outboard seats are heated as well. The heating option on the multifunction steering wheel came in handy during the harsh Cape winter. The Jeep Grand Cherokee's back passengers have a lot of charging choices.

Passengers in the second row have access to a number of charging options, as well as heated seats.

A computerised rearview mirror and a dual Bluetooth connection for mobile devices are among the notable features. There are many options for powering up, including a front-facing wireless charging pad as well as two USB-A connectors and two USB-C connections.

There are two USB-A ports, two USB-C ports, and a 3-pin 230V power outlet for use by rear-seat passengers.

Most importantly, they have Jeep-specific equipment and reliable technical support that is recognized and certified by Jeep globally. Grey imports are vehicles that have been purchased outside of the manufacturer's authorized distribution channels.

As it will be a gray import and not protected under warranty, there is no use in investing in luxury cars outside official channels, as you will burn your fingers.

My decision

When making such an investment, you must decide if you want less or more car. Size-wise, the 7-seater is the superior option. More cargo options are available to you. The 5-seat version still offers advantages.

It delivers quite a bit of value for the money when compared to its British and German competitors, thanks to its somewhat lower fuel consumption, simpler maneuverability and parking, and less compromised looks. If I were on the market for such an SUV I would take a look at the Jeep Grand Cherokee without blinking.
