Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Power Development, Gloria Magombo has challenged stakeholders in the energy sector to make use of the country's vast clean energy sources towards sustainably attaining the country's development goals.

Speaking at an opening cocktail of the International Renewable Energy Conference -organised by The Standard, one of three publications under private media house Alpha Media Holdings (AMH)- in Victoria Falls on Tuesday, Magombo said there was a need to urgently incorporate the readily available renewable energy across sectors.

"We believe everyone has something to say and to help to ensure that we create an enabling environment to make sure (that) all the resources which we have as a country right from the water which is next to us here,  the sun, the wind and any other resources which we have.

"We need to convert materials to useful energy and make sure that our country is powered to the next century especially to ensure that we meet our NDS1 objective of bringing in an additional 1000 megawatts within the next two years," said Magombo.

The conference is running under the theme Building a Sustainable Energy Future and has drawn experts from around the world.

The conference has drawn industry leaders, experts, innovators, and enthusiasts to explore the latest developments, share insights, and shape the future for renewable energy.

Also speaking at the same event Victoria Falls city mayor Prince Thuso Moyo said there is need to fully utilize renewable energy resources, which are abundant so as to mitigate climate change

"It cannot be overemphasised that the need to invest in alternative sources of energy that are clean, accessible, affordable, sustainable and reliable is long overdue," he said.

AMH editor in chief Kholwani Nyathi said the media group had created a platform for energy experts to discuss local solutions for global crises including energy poverty and climate change.

"As AMH we are committed to give Zimbabweans and indeed the region platforms to talk to each other about issues that affect them," he said.

The conference will end on Friday with its patron President Emmerson Mnangagwa expected to grace the event.
