A BEITBRIDGE waste recycling entrepreneur Marshal Muyambi attracted a lot of foreign visitors with his products at the just-ended Sanganai/ Hlanganani Tourism Expo held at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair in Bulawayo.
Muyambi is the founder of Ha-Makhadzi company that recycles waste in the border town.
Ha-Makhadzi showcased craft products made of recycled plastics, soft drink cans, old cassette ribbons, wires and cows horns as a way to conserve the environment.
Muyambi said the business is aimed at teaching the girl child to recycle waste materials and fight poverty within communities.
“We make ornaments using cow horns, handbags using beads and old video cassette ribbons so as to protect our environment from pollution. We also make toys using cans which people throw away. The reason why we use these materials is because they are easily accessible, therefore if someone brings cans or ribbons I will give her R20 and after sewing I will get R30 as profit,” Muyambi said.
She said the programmes is aimed at empowering all women regardless of whether they excelled at school or not and it works hand-in-hand with arts and culture.
“The main challenge that we had was the coronavirus because that was the time that I wanted to grow my business and we lost contacts of clients we had before. I hope this event will bring more clients because our clients are usually international tourists because they value craftwork,” added Muyambi.
Ha-Makhadzi entrepreneurs partnered with Mutsa Guest and Green Roof lodge where these craftworks are sold to international tourists who visit these lodges.
