Court hammer

A 27-year-old man from Shurugwi, Midlands province, has been slapped with an 18-year jail term for killing his 94-year-old grandmother accusing her of bewitching other family members.

In a statement on Wednesday, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPAZ) said Takudzwa Mugariri of Maroza village went to the deceased’s home on February 3, alleging she had cast a spell on family members.

“The accused person burned the now deceased’s clothes and traditional medicine before he struck her with a wooden log several times in the head, face, buttocks and back leading to her death”, said the NPAZ.

A police report was made, leading to his arrest, trial and subsequent imprisonment.

In a similar case, three brothers Zamani Ndlovu, Mehluli Ndlovu and Mpilwenzima of Gweru were sentenced to 30 years imprisonment each after they were found guilty of killing a 31-year-old man.

“Whilst drinking, the now deceased referred to the accused persons as his brothers-in-law since one of the accused persons had a baby with the now deceased’s sister,” said NPAZ.

This sparked outrage, leading the accused to brutally assault the now deceased, inflicting multiple blows.

“They also struck him with a brick and stabbed him with a knife on the thigh, leading to the deceased’s death,” the NPAZ revealed.
