Atlantic Council to host women’s conference

Joseph Lemoine, senior director of the Freedom and Prosperity Centre

THE Atlantic Council is set to launch its Women for Prosperity project at a two-day conference in Harare starting today.

The project is aimed at empowering emerging women business leaders while enhancing their economic participation in Zimbabwe.

The conference, organised by the Atlantic Council’s Freedom and Prosperity Center in collaboration with advisory council member Joanna Sharpe, will feature a capacity-building programme for women entrepreneurs followed by a policy workshop.

The event is aimed at identifying trends and proposals that will attract foreign direct investment and bolster women's roles in the economy.

This initiative coincides with the release of the centre’s latest report, How Zimbabwe Can Achieve Its Vision of Prosperity, which evaluates Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 Agenda while the ambitious framework aims to elevate the nation to upper-middle-income status by 2030, emphasising the need for both economic growth and social progress.

Keynote speakers at the conference will include Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion minister Mthuli Ncube, WestProp chief executive Ken Sharpe, Women Alliance of Business Associations in Zimbabwe chairperson Irene Mukarakate and EU ambassador to Zimbabwe Jobst von Kirchmann, among others.

“Zimbabwe stands at a pivotal crossroads, with Vision 2030 serving as both a roadmap and a call to action. Achieving upper-middle-income status is not just an aspirational goal it is a necessity in today's increasingly competitive global landscape,” Joseph Lemoine, senior director of the Freedom and Prosperity Centre, said in a statement yesterday.

The Women for Prosperity initiative aims to connect industry leaders with emerging entrepreneurs, fostering collaboration among government officials, civil society organisations and private sector leaders.

The programme will utilise data-driven policy proposals informed by insights from the Freedom and Prosperity Indexes.

The Atlantic Council’s Freedom and Prosperity Center acknowledges the contributions of the Sharpe family in facilitating the report and associated events, highlighting the collaborative efforts involved in this initiative.
