8 killed in Chivhu-Nyazura Road accident

He said the driver of the Shacman truck fled the scene, leaving behind the vehicle and some documents.

EIGHT people were killed on the spot when a commuter omnibus was involved in a head-on collision with a haulage truck at the 135km peg along the Chivhu-Nyazura Road at Save Bridge on Sunday night.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi yesterday confirmed the accident and said eight people were killed, while four others were injured when a Nissan Vanette travelling towards Dorowa with 11 passengers on board was involved in a head-on collision with a Shacman truck which was travelling in the opposite direction.

“Preliminary investigations by the police indicate that the accident occurred after the Nissan Vanette N200 vehicle hit a grid on the bridge, resulting in the ball joint of the vehicle dislodging. Subsequently, the vehicle veered onto the oncoming lane,” Nyathi said.

He said the driver of the Shacman truck fled the scene, leaving behind the vehicle and some documents.

Nyathi named seven of the eight as Priviledge Muzanenhamo (41), a female, Elizabeth Tomu (30), a female, Anotida Zenda (1), a female infant, George Kamhunga (34), a male, and Aleck Zenda (31), a male, all from Timire Park in Ruwa, as well as Wadzanayi Kamhunga (30), a female and Angela Kamhunga (25), a female, all from Kuwadzana 1, Harare.

The bodies of the eight victims were taken to Murambinda Mission Hospital mortuary for post-mortem, while the injured were admitted to the same hospital.

Nyathi urged motorists to service their vehicles to ensure that they are fit and secure to transport passengers or goods on the roads.

“The police is concerned with the number of pirate taxis or mishikashika vehicles, which are being used to flout traffic laws and in the process get involved in road traffic accidents. It is sad to note that some of these vehicles will be overloaded with no regard for the safety of travellers.”
