2 miners die in explosion

TWO men died while three others were injured in a mine explosion that occurred at a gold mine in Mberengwa on Saturday.

TWO men died while three others were injured in a mine explosion that occurred at a gold mine in Mberengwa on Saturday.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko yesterday confirmed the incident.

“Two men died on the spot, while three others escaped with varying injuries after an explosion in a mineshaft,” Mahoko said.

“It is alleged that James Ndebele (38) of Maglas township in Zvishavane and Alfred Hove (19) of Village Bricks under Chief Bvute in Mberengwa were working underground in a mineshaft, while three other miners were working outside (the mine shaft).

“While working underground, Hove asked for fire to light his cigarette and one of the miners threw a burning log into the mineshaft and it landed on top of explosives, which exploded, killing Ndebele and Hove instantly.”

He said the three miners who were outside the mineshaft sustained varying injuries after being hit by flying objects from the explosion.

Mahoko said police have since instituted investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.

He, however, urged miners to observe safety rules at their workplaces.
