Musician Ivy Kombo’s case postponed

Kombo and Kasi are being accused of allegedly acquiring fake certificates to practise law in Zimbabwe after obtaining Bachelor of Law degrees in England.

Harare regional magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka yesterday postponed a case in which musician Ivy Kombo and her husband Admire Kasi are facing fraud charges.

Lead defence counsel Admire Rubaya was absent attending a funeral in Masvingo.

The matter was deferred to June 18 for trial continuation.

Kombo and Kasi are being accused of allegedly acquiring fake certificates to practise law in Zimbabwe after obtaining Bachelor of Law degrees in England.

The State recently gave the greenlight to call High Court judge Justice Sylvia Chirau-Mugomba to testify in the case.

Chirau-Mugomba will testify following spirited efforts by the State which is being represented by Anesu Chirenje.

It is alleged that she authored a letter authorising the exemption of the couple from writing conversion examinations which consist of eight subjects.

Chirenje said the testimony of the judge would provide justice to the case.

He also said their case might collapse if Mugomba confirms the exemptions.

However, the defence lawyers from the onset objected on the basis that it was unfair and accused the State of trying to bring new evidence midway into the case.

They also contended that the law does not allow investigation and prosecution of the same case to run concurrently.

The lawyers said they had not prepared the defence along those lines.
