Union leader fined for absconding duties

Tapedza Zhou

A TEACHERS’ union leader has been fined $45 000 by the Primary and Secondary Education ministry after he failed to invigilate last year’s Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) examinations citing incapacitation.

In a statement dated December 2, 2022, the ministry said Educators Union of Zimbabwe secretary-general Tapedza Zhou committed an offence by absconding from invigilation duties.

In an interview yesterday, Zhou described the verdict as an attempt to cow union leaders into silence.

“We are not satisfied with this judgment because we did not do anything wrong, why should we invigilate for Zimsec which is not our employer? This issue has to answer the fundamental questions on whether or not teachers should invigilate for Zimsec for free,” Zhou said.
