Lochinvar to host mental health awareness day for senior citizens

Comedian CKhanyiso Dat Guy

SENIOR citizens from Southerton, Lochinvar and surrounding neighbourhoods, along with their families, will enjoy an afternoon of engaging activities and entertainment at a mental health awareness event aimed at promoting wellness.

The Vintage Vibes Family Fun Day, to be hosted tomorrow at Everbrite Gardens in Lochinvar, is tailored to provide mental stimulation and stress relief for senior citizens, while fostering inter-generational connections and community bonding.

It is in partnership with The Friendship Bench, an evidence-based intervention developed in Zimbabwe to bridge the mental health treatment gap.

Former Miss Malaika Brita Masalethulini will grace the event as a special guest. The event will feature a comedy show by Ckhanyiso Dat Guy, live music from jazz artist Brian Nyahuma who will perform yesteryear hits and an expert discussion on Mental Wellness.

“For me, this initiative is about being my brother and sister's keeper, fostering a supportive community, encouraging open conversation about mental health and providing resources for those seeking help,” Nyahuma said.

Senior participants will be invited to share their life stories and experiences to promote social interaction and community engagement. Complimentary health services will include optional blood pressure checks and breast cancer screenings.

A special invitation has also been extended to Missionaries of Charity Old Peoples Home in Ardbennie, allowing their residents to interact with the community and enjoy tailored entertainment.

“Senior citizens often lack opportunities for socialisation and engagement. That is why our event focuses on intergenerational connection, nostalgia and joy,” event organiser Elizabeth Dziva told IndependentXtra, adding that there are plans to have quarterly events in Lochinvar and Southerton and eventually expand to other areas making it a regular regional event.

“We are grateful for the support to date and look forward to more support that will enable us to make a lasting impact in communities.”

The fun and inclusive event aims to celebrate life, positivity and reduce loneliness among senior citizens and also offer a nostalgic experience through live music and retro entertainment, promoting a sense of nostalgia and shared experience.

“Mental health affects us all, regardless of age. By engaging senior citizens and their families, we are breaking down barriers and fostering a culture of understanding. Our event is a beacon of hope, and we invite you to join us in making a difference,” reads part of a statement from the organisers released this week.

The #WellnessVintageVibesDanceOff social media challenge is now underway, locals are invited to record a video of themselves dancing to yesteryear's hits with their grandparents or neighborhood seniors and share it on social media, tagging @Wellness Wonders Munhu Vanhu (Facebook) and @wellnesswonders (TikTok).
