A 35 YEAR old woman from Chiredzi was slapped with a four-year-jail term for kidnapping a seven- day-old baby.
Prosperity Hobyani appeared before a Chiredzi Magistrates' Court on kidnapping charges.
She pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to four years in jail.
One year was suspended. She will serve three years effectively. According to the State, on September 2 this year, Hobyani met the complainant who was returning home from vaccinating her baby at Chiredzi General Hospital.
They walked together to Nyore-nyore business centre where the complainant intended to find transport back home in Mkwasine.
Hobyani persuaded the complainant to buy her a drink from one of the shops, leaving her baby with her. When she returned, Hobyani had vanished.

She reported the matter to the police and the baby was found 12 hours later at Hobyani's place of residence in Chipimbi.
