7 perish in Marondera road accident

When NewsDay arrived at the scene, bodies were still trapped in the wreckage while bottles of an illicit alcoholic beverage popularly known as Mushwirititi were strewn all over.

SEVEN people died on the spot while four others were seriously injured yesterday morning after a Honda Fit pirate taxi travelling towards Harare collided with a VW Toures on the 60-kilometre peg  outside Marondera along the Harare-Mutare Highway.

The pirate taxi had nine occupants including the driver.

When NewsDay arrived at the scene, bodies were still trapped in the wreckage while bottles of an illicit alcoholic beverage popularly known as Mushwirititi were strewn all over.

According to a police preliminary report, the pirate taxi encroached onto the opposite lane, resulting in a head-on collision with the VW Toures.

Mashonaland East provincial police have since declared the place an accident blackspot.

Mary Gomba, a vendor operating near the accident scene said the Honda Fit was speeding.
