African Roots musician and stone sculptor Bryn Taurai Mteki has reverted to his widely recognised stage name Sekurutau, abandoning his latest moniker Mhondoro Sekurutau in what he describes as a strategic move to strengthen his artistic brand.
This marks the fourth time the veteran artist has changed his name, a pattern closely tied to the various creative phases of his long career.
Sekurutau said the shift is aimed at reconnecting with the identity that made him a household name on both the music and arts scenes.
In an interview with Standard Style, the musician confirmed the decision, saying the name Sekurutau becomes effective immediately, although his return to active music performance will come next year.
“I realised that the name Sekurutau is the brand people grew up with, connected with, and still recognise today,” he said.
“Reverting to it is part of a bigger vision to consolidate the brand as I prepare to release new projects. Next year I am coming back on stage with full force.”
The Norah hitmaker — famed for the collaboration he did with the late Zanu PF commissar Elliot Manyika — promised fans a refreshed musical journey.
“People should expect a lot of live gigs and several albums,” he said.
“I have been working quietly, but 2025 is the year the music family will feel the real Sekurutau again.”
Sekurutau said fans should look forward to an African roots and Soukus blended track, featuring Congolese star Koffi Olomide.
Beyond music, Mteki’s artistic footprint has stretched across continents through his stone-sculpting craft, a skill that once saw him relocating abroad to pursue international opportunities.
Upon returning to Zimbabwe, he diversified into business, running several ventures under his brand’s umbrella, BrynBrands.
A son of renowned sculptor Richard Mteki, Sekurutau also made a brief foray into politics, contesting in the 2018 presidential elections, further adding to his complex public persona.
With the name change now settled, fans await Sekuruau’s next chapter — one that blends his traditional roots, global artistic experience, and renewed passion for live performance.
