Following his impressive semi-final performance last Wednesday night, comedian Learnmore Jonasi has stormed into the final of America’s Got Talent Season 19.
His act, which had the audience roaring with laughter, featured a clever blend of American pop culture references and observations about everyday life in Africa.
Jonasi’s unique perspective and relatable humour resonated deeply with both the audience and the judges.
After his semi-final performance, Jonasi received a standing ovation from the judging panel.
Howie Mandel described his act as “epic,” highlighting the dedication and hard work that Jonasi puts into his performances.
Jonasi is tipped to be the first comedian to ever win the coveted US$ 1 million prize since the launch of the competition.
While the prize is advertised as US$1 million, winners can choose to receive it as a lump sum or as an annuity paid out over 40 years at around $25 000 per year.
Both options are subject to taxation.
Social media was awash with fellow artists, fans and brands congratulating the comedian over his performance.
“Congrats Learnmore Jonasi, now let’s go for the win… no holding back,” posted local comedian Doc Vikela.
Lawyer Fadzayi Mahere described Jonasi’s performance as impressive.
“Fellow Zimbabweans, our fighter and trailblazing international stand-up comedian Learnmore Jonasi has made it to the finals of America’s Got Talent,” posted Mahere on her Facebook page.
“Let’s cheer hard for him, amplify his outstanding achievement and retweet his beautiful story.”
UK-based arts promoter and founder of Xtratime Entertainment Tongai Mbidzo said Jonasi had been trailblazing throughout the competition and deserves the crown.
“Learnmore Jonasi makes it into the America’s Got Talent final, congratulations,” he said.
“The guy has put a lot of effort on the stage and is doing very well since he relocated to America.
“I have worked with him and I know what he is capable of.
“He deserves the big one.”
Xtratime Entertainment has over the years promoted stand-up comedy, having hosted local and international comedians in Harare.
Meanwhile, Jonasi will be making a highly anticipated homecoming performance at the Shoko Festival 2024.
This is a huge deal for Zimbabwean comedy as it marks Jonasi’s first performance on home soil since his viral appearance on America’s Got Talent.
The Shoko Festival is scheduled for September 26 to 28 in Harare and Chitungwiza.
The festival is an annual celebration of arts, culture, and technology in Zimbabwe. It’s a platform for local and international artists, musicians, and performers to showcase their talents.
The Shoko Festival typically features a diverse line-up of music, comedy, theatre, film, and digital arts.
