MATOBO Ward 19 councillor Nqobizitha Ngwenya has welcomed the move by the government to consider employing locals ahead of outsiders as preparations for the Independence Day celebrations start.

The government announced that this year’s national Independence Day celebrations will be held in Maphisa,Matobo district, in Matabeleland South province.

Ngwenya told Southern Eye that a lot of employment opportunities have been availed for infrastructure development in the area.

“As we speak now, there are 30 vacancies of builders that have arisen,” he said.

“The first preference is being given to the locals. The numbers are not enough, and there is still a call for more qualified builders to come forth, but if numbers fail to meet the target, a similar call will be extended to outsiders.”

He stated that opportunities had also arisen for tilers, plumbers and electricians, to mention a few.

“We are hopeful that this will bring sustainable development in our district.

“A classroom block will be constructed at Mahetshe Primary and Secondary schools.

“A new computer laboratory will be constructed at Minda Secondary School and other business units such as solarised boreholes.”

Ngwenya noted that the roads leading to the main venue for the independence celebrations and to the children’s party venue had been widened.

“What is left now is the tarring process, as promised.

“A lot of infrastructure will be happening around Maphisa area.

“What is needed is the job to be done and locals are encouraged to apply first for the available opportunities before the same opportunities can be given to those from outside the province.”
