Support United, Naba claim volleyball honours

First to put their hands on the coveted silverware were Support Unit who edged UZ Wolves 3-2 in a blood and thunder final.

SUPPORT Unit women's and NABA men’s teams were crowned champions of the Harare Premier Volleyball League at Support Unit in Chikurubi yesterday.

First to put their hands on the coveted silverware were Support Unit who edged UZ Wolves 3-2 in a blood and thunder final.

This was a repeat of the final round of matches prior to the semifinals in which Support again emerged 3-2 victors.

On that eventful day, Support Unit handed the log leaders, Harare City a 3-2 defeat to force their way into top last four.

The scoreline has been Support Unit's trademark as they saw off Manyame Falcons 3-2 in the first semifinal match played at the same venue on Saturday.

Raphael Hotera, Support Unit Ladies coach said they had an opportunity to watch UZ Wolves earlier which helped them come up with a strategy to thwart them.

"We are excited to win this title. We had a little turn around time to try and counter UZ Wolves attacking play after watching them in their semifinal clash against Harare City,” Hotera told NewsDay Sport.

“Credit to the girls, they played according to instructions. We have been somehow used to lasting the distance in the deciding set and today we didn't disappoint either."

In the Men’s final NABA Men gunned down Black Rhinos 3-1 to lift the trophy.

“It’s always a great feeling to add a title into your trophy cabinet, it was a good match, difficult to contain Rhinos, but in the end we came out victorious,” NABA head coach Munyaradzi Mavima told NewsDay Sport.

Harare City Women settled for third place after beating Manyame Falcons 3-2, while Black Mambas walloped Support Unit 3-0 in the men's third place playoff to win bronze.
