Chimombe, Mpofu to spend another week in prison

ZANU PF central committee member and businessman Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu will spend another week behind bars in a case in which they are facing a charge of defrauding the government of more than US$7 million under the presidential goat scheme.

ZANU PF central committee member and businessman Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu will spend another week behind bars in a case in which they are facing a charge of defrauding the government of more than US$7 million under the presidential goat scheme.

The two appeared before Harare regional magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa, who deferred their bail ruling to July 16.

Defence counsel Tapson Dzvetero claimed that the arrest of Chimombe and Mpofu is politically motivated.

In response, Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission lead investing officer Henry Chapwanya disputed the assertion saying the anti-graft body is apolitical.

“The ministry is bleeding because of that advance payment which it was prejudiced of,” Chapwanya told the court.

Chimombe and Mpofu were arraigned before the courts for allegedly defrauding the government of more than US$7 million meant for the Presidential Goat Pass-on Scheme.

They were arrested almost a fortnight ago after having a fallout with convicted fraudster Wicknell Chivayo over a US$40 million tender to supply electoral material to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.
