MUTARE-BASED film director Stephen Mutsango is working on a new local series titled Chemutengure, set to premiere on September 15 on YouTube.
In an interview with Standard Style, Mutsango described the upcoming series as follows: "Chemutengure is about Mutapa, an undercover intelligence operative, and his son Mwenje, who had to live on the streets as a blind man to infiltrate Jaguar's operations and expose his illicit dealings."
Mutsango added that the series explores common societal problems such as drug and substance abuse, corruption, politics, and mental health.
The director, who co-wrote the series with Ellias Muonde, noted that this is his first film to delve into politics and corruption.
While his previous films were primarily crime-based, Mutsango decided to explore these topics to shed light on the corrupt schemes of politicians who exploit society.
He believes the film will likely spark a political paradigm shift.
The film is being shot in Mutare and features local actors such as Fungai Katerere, Tanyaradzwa Mutsago, Junerosebud Chiyadzwa, and Obland Makedenge.
It was written by Ellias Muonde, with the story by Stephen Mutsango who also serves as the film director. Chemutengure is produced by An Eastlife Entertainment Studios production.
Mutsango, who began his filmmaking career in 2016, has already produced 13 films.
His 2023 film, Comrade, which featured foreign characters, was nominated for the Outstanding Feature Film award at the Namas.
As a filmmaker, Mutsango feels he has gained significant creative freedom.
