One of Zimbabwe’s biggest and most celebrated genres, Zimdancehall, will celebrate its 20th anniversary at Dzivarasekwa Stadium in Harare on August 12.

Artists performing live at the event include Freeman, Killer T, Silent Killer, Kinnah, King Shaddy, and Sniper Storm, among others.

In an interview, organiser Jack Dzambasa said the event will celebrate the genre’s growth and provide a platform for upcoming artists to showcase their talent.

“Zimdancehall started in the early 1990s in Zimbabwe, influenced by Jamaican reggae and dancehall music,” he said.

“It gained popularity in the 2000s, with artists like Winky D, Slaggy, Yout Potato, Daddy Distress, Sniper Storm, Badman Gwanz, Major E, and Elder Templeman contributing to its growth.

“By 2004, Zimdancehall had become a distinct genre with a hard-core dancehall sound and Shona lyrics.”

He said over the past two decades, Zimdancehall has evolved, captivating audiences both locally and internationally.

“From its early days in Harare’s ghettos to its current global recognition, Zimdancehall has produced legendary artists, iconic songs, and unforgettable moments,” Dzambasa said.

“As we mark this milestone, we honour the pioneers, innovators, and fans who have contributed to the growth and success of this beloved genre.

“Here’s to 20 years of Zimdancehall’s infectious rhythms, thought-provoking lyrics, and the unforgettable energy that has come to define Zimbabwe’s music scene.”

Zimdancehall has significantly impacted the Zimbabwean music scene, which was previously dominated by Sungura.

The 2000s brought a distinctive genre that resonated with the youth, creating opportunities and employment.
