SS: Why law?
RN: Certainly, there are several reasons why someone might choose to study law but I did so for the pursuit of justice. Many individuals are drawn to law because they have a strong sense of justice and a desire to make a positive impact on society. Studying law provides a framework to uphold justice, defend the rights of individuals, and ensure fairness in legal proceedings.
Law is a complex and intellectually stimulating field of study. It requires critical thinking, analytical skills, and the ability to comprehend and interpret intricate legal concepts and principles. For those who enjoy intellectual challenges and problem-solving, studying law can be highly rewarding.
A law degree provides a solid foundation for a wide range of careers, not just within the legal field. The skills acquired while studying law, such as analytical thinking, research abilities, effective communication, negotiation skills, and attention to detail, are transferable and highly valued in various industries and professions. So another reason would be versatility that comes with the field.
Advocacy and Influence: Law offers the opportunity to advocate for the rights and interests of others. Whether representing individuals organizations, or societal causes, studying law equips individuals with the skills and knowledge to make persuasive arguments, negotiate effectively, and effect positive change through legal means.
Career opportunities: Law provides a diverse range of career paths, including becoming a lawyer, judge, legal consultant, legal researcher, corporate counsel, policy advisor, or even an entrepreneur. The field offers a multitude of opportunities for professional growth, financial stability, and the ability to specialize in different areas of law.
Personal development: Studying law involves constant learning and personal growth. It challenges individuals to think critically, analyse complex situations, and develop their ethical and moral compass. It can also enhance their interpersonal skills, conflict resolution abilities, and decision-making capabilities.
SS: What are you doing at the moment?
RN: I am currently working as an inhouse Counsel (Corporate Legal Advisory) under a South African law firm PGA Attorneys. I do mainly specialize in commercial law with most of our clients being banks/financial institutions.
