Organisers of the Alick Macheso shows in South Africa have implored the musician to use his time on stage to push for the Covid-19 vaccination.
Macheso, who is the humanitarian ambassador of the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society and is among artistes pushing for vaccination, will perform two rescheduled shows in Johannesburg next week.
He is expected to perform at the Germistone Lounge and Newtown Music factory on October 9 and October 10 respectively.
Xtratime Events, who are organising the two events through their spokesperson Wishart Mashipe, said all was set for the Madhawu singer shows, but were eager to use the musician’s influence to push for Covid-19 vaccination.
“We are expecting Baba Sharo to encourage people to go for Covid-19 vaccination because we know he is doing that in Zimbabwe,” Mashipe said.
“It’s a great opportunity to also educate people about Covid-19 through music and dance. We are optimistic that the musician would perform in Zimbabwe before the end of the year.”
Mashipe said supporting acts at both shows would include Darlington Tanganyika, Nox Guni, Pamela Zulu, Paddy Watts, Dino Mudondo and Baba Tencen.
Macheso was scheduled to perform in South Africa in June to celebrate his 53rd birthday, but the gigs set for Johannesburg were cancelled at the 11th hour due to a sharp increase in Covid-19 cases in that country.
At that time President Cyril Ramaphosa imposed a level two lockdown that included a night-time curfew, which started at 11pm while the number of people allowed to gather were significantly reduced.
However, South Africa has since relaxed its restrictions and is now allowing gatherings of a maximum of 100 indoors while 250 can attend events outside.
Macheso’s publicist Tich Makahamadze confirmed the South African trip, saying they were ready to be united with their legion of followers across the Limpopo River.
“The band is ready and Macheso is eagerly waiting for the shows,” Makahamadze said.
“I think people attending those two shows are the luckiest as they will be given time to listen to some of the songs on the forthcoming album,” Makahamadze said.
Macheso is expected to release a new album before the end of the year.
