SCOTTLAND FC coach Genesis Mangombe is hopeful his team can still claim the Northern Region Soccer League (NRSL) ahead of their encounter against CCLEE Mhangura at Rufaro Stadium this afternoon.

Scottland, owned by Mabvuku-Tafara constituency legislator Pedzisayi “Scott” Sakupwanya, is one of the four teams vying for the sole ticket into the topflight league next year.

Over the weekend, Scottland had to dig deep into their reserves to beat PAM FC 2-0 away from home to keep up with the leading teams in the race for promotion.

Mangombe emphasised the need to avoid dropping points as the promotion race enters a crucial stage.

“At this stage, we want to avoid dropping points and continue winning even when the match is very tough like what we did [against PAM FC],” he said.

“The good thing is that we have enough depth and we have players who can come off the bench to change the complexion of the game.”

Scottland are third on the log table, four points behind log leaders MWOS FC, going into the midweek games on 53 points in 26 matches. They have the same number of points as second-placed Harare City, who have a better goal difference.

However, MWOS FC have a game in hand after their weekend encounter away at Shamva Mine was abandoned due to crowd trouble.

Black Rhinos are in fourth place on 53 points.

Scottland’s opponents CCLEE Mhangura are bottom of the standings with 18 points from 26 matches.
