FORMER Warriors striker Nyasha Mushekwi continued with his goal-scoring exploits in the Chinese Super League after he netted his 13th goal of the season to help Zhejiang Professional to a 3-0 win over former side Daliang Pro at Huzhou Olympic Sports Centre yesterday.
The goal saw the veteran former CAPS United marksman move within a goal of leading scorer and teammate, Brazilian Leonardo.
Mushekwi doubled Zhejiang’s lead with a 17th minute strike after he was assisted by Gabonese midfielder Alexander N'Doumbou before Jin Cheng killed the match as contest 10 minutes later.
The win saw Zhejiang extend their unbeaten run in the league to nine matches as they moved within three points of the Asian Champions League qualifiers spot in fifth place with six matches remaining in the season.
Only the top three teams qualify for the champions’ league and last year Zhejiang managed to finish in third place.
Barely two weeks ago Mushekwi was named the Player of the Week in the Chinese Super League after scoring a sensational brace including an injury time winner in a pulsating 4-3 away win at leaders Shanghai Port.
Judging by his goal-scoring form this season Mushekwi is looking like a genuine contender for the golden boot with each passing week as he continues to enjoy football in China.
Mushekwi is joint second on the goal-scoring list alongside Chinese Wu Lei from Shanghai Port while Serbian footballer has scored 13 goals for Henan FC to settle in fourth place.
Ghana’s Abdul-Aziz Yakubu, who turns out for Wuhan Three Towns, completes the top five having found the back of the net 11 times.
Of interest is the fact that Mushekwi is currently doing better than some internationally acclaimed stars such as former Chelsea Brazilian star Oscar who has eight strikes.
Former Belgian international Marouane Fellaini, who used to play for another English football giant Manchester United is on nine goals.
The 36-year-old basketball-player-turned-footballer has reached double figures for his Chinese Super League club in the last three seasons and is also the all-time top scorer for his team with 69 goals in 119 appearances since joining them back in 2019.
Last season, the Zimbabwean striker scored 18 league goals for Zhejiang to add to the 23 from the previous year to help the team win promotion back into the Super League.
