THE country’s leading amateur golfers will converge in the resort city of Victoria Falls for the 2022 FBC Elephant Hills Open Golf Championship to be played at Elephant Hills Golf Club from October 22 to 23.
The Elephant Hills Open is one of the five order of merit championships on the Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA)’s calendar along with the Matabeleland Amateur, the Dugmore Trophy, the Harare Amateur and the Hwange Open.
Matabeleland Golf Association president Vincent Makamure, whose province is hosting the event in collaboration with the Elephant Hills Resort said preparations for this year’s event were going well.
“We are almost there with the preparations; the course is being maintained to the required standard. Other preparations which are being conducted by the club at the hotel are almost ready,” Makamure said.
“The championship will start as early as 6:30am on Saturday as the divisions will be playing 36 holes and 18 more from the others. Registration will be closing on the 20th. Expected are 72-plus golfers in all divisions A,B,C and D for the ladies from within the country and outside. It would have been better if we get about 120 golfers in all divisions, but so far we are expecting 72+,”Makamure said.
FBC are the title sponsors of the championship, while the other sponsors include Safeguard and African Sun.
Last year’s edition attracted participants from Harare, Botswana, Hwange, Victoria Falls, Zambia and Botswana.
Former African Sun employee, Josphat Phiri, who is a member at Elephant Hills Golf Club won the prize with a gross score of 166, having played the least number of shots than all other players.
A bigger stronger field is expected at this year’s tournament with players eyeing the World Amateur Golf Rankings points on offer.
