GWERU businesswoman Smelly Dube has been listed among the world’s top 100 most influential people for 2024 alongside prominent personalities such as former United States president Donald Trump and Zimbabwean billionaire Strive Masiyiwa.
She was honoured together with her husband Mncedisi Dube at an event held at the Double Tree by Hilton London, Ealing on July 30, 2024.
The award recognises individuals whose voices have greatly impacted the global stage across various fields, including technology, business, politics, arts and more.
In their citation, Leaders Without Borders, who are the organisers, noted that the influence of individuals from different walks of life cannot be overstated in a fast-evolving world.
"The list of 100 global achievers aims to shine a spotlight on those individuals whose words, actions, and ideas have resonated far and wide, shaping conversations, policies, and perceptions on a global scale," reads the citation.
"It encompasses a diverse range of perspectives and contributions, recognising the power of influence in various forms."
Other noted figures who were honoured were American billionaire Alon Musk, Rwanda President Paul Kagame, late former South African president Nelson Mandela, late cleric Desmond Tutu, British businessman Richard Branston, Kenyan academic professor PLO Lumumba and former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo.
"The top 100 influential global voices serve as a testament to the power of individuals to shape our world and inspire positive change," said the convener Hillary Emoh.
"I am humbled by these accolades and indeed inspired to keep working hard for my country and a better world for all."
The River Valley proprietor said she dedicated the accolade to her employees and everyone who stood with them over the years.
Dube is involved in mining, a male-dominated industry where she runs Tabekwe Mine, a gold mining venture employing 160 workers.
Her philanthropic work has made her a respected leader in the country’s business community.
She has been in the field of philanthropy for more than a decade looking after hundreds of orphans in schools and providing monthly food hampers to over 30 elderly headed households.
