A police detective yesterday told the Harare magistrates court that opposition leader Jacob Ngarivhume is a serial offender who will lead protests during the forthcoming Sadc summit in Harare if he is released on bail.

Ngarivhume, who is jointly charged with clergyman Kelvin Gonde, was appearing before Harare regional magistrate Farai Gwatima following his arrest a week ago on charges that they took part in a demonstration in June.

Victor Mukohwa, the officer-in-charge CID Law and Order section, argued that Ngarivhume as leader of the opposition party Transform Zimbabwe was once arrested in connection with disorderly conduct.

Mukohwa claimed Ngarivhume was arrested while planning a demonstration ahead of the Sadc summit.

He said if the two were released they would incite the public to commit violence.

The matter was postponed to August 14 for continuation of the bail application.
