GWERU property developer River Valley Properties last week donated groceries to wives of late war veterans interred at Tongogara District Heroes Acre in Shurugwi, Midlands province.

River Valley chief executive Smelly Dube said the donations was in remembrance of the role played by former liberation fighters in bringing independence to the country.

“As land developers, the government gave us land to build houses for our people, but we should go a step further and make sure that the vulnerable widows of our fallen liberation heroes have access to food,” Dube said.

“Today, we have donated an assortment of groceries that include rice, cooking oil, sugar and soap, among others, to at least 35 widows in Shurugwi and we do this annually during Heroes Day commemorations.”

Shurugwi-based war veteran Isaac Chivendera said Dube, also a gold miner in Shurugwi, was empowering the community through paying school fees for vulnerable children and urged other miners to develop corporate social responsibility programmes.

“We have quite a number of miners here in Shurugwi, but few have corporate social responsibility programmes,” he said.

“Dube has paid fees up to university level for children here in Shurugwi and we really commend that gesture. We hope other miners will follow suit.”

As part of Heroes Day commemorations in the Midlands province, River Valley hosted a luncheon for former freedom fighters in Gweru.
