ZIMBABWE’S biggest business weekly this week unveiled a cast of distinguished capital markets executives, who will present at next month’s inaugural capital markets indaba set for Nyanga.

Faith Zaba, editor of the Zimbabwe Independent (ZimInd), said some of the region's and country’s most accomplished capital markets executives will join David Mnangagwa, deputy minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion, as keynote speakers.

The speakers include Kenneth Matomola, chairperson of the Sadc committee of insurance, securities and Non-Banking Financial Authorities for Africa, Vimal Parmar, Financial Sector Deepening Africa senior specialist, capital markets, Tendai Matika, head Africa responsible for investment ecosystems United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment and  Yona Banda, chairperson at the Securities and Exchange Commission of Zimbabwe (SecZim).

Justin Bgoni, chief executive officer (CEO) at the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE), and Anymore Taruvinga, CEO at SecZim, will give updates on capital markets dynamics.

This will help investors get an impression of Zimbabwe's capital markets.

The Independent is partnering SecZim and the ZSE to hold the conference.

Taruvinga is a chartered financial analyst with over 14 years’ experience in the banking and capital markets sectors.

He was group equities market analyst at Afrasia Bank. Taruvinga was also an investment analyst for MMC Capital, and group research analyst at Premier Finance Group, now Ecobank.

He was previously head of the ZSE markets responsible for operations, trading, and listings. Previously, he held the position of head of business development and marketing, as well as product development manager at the ZSE.

Apart from a wide network, Taruvinga has a wealth of practical experience in marketing, business development, strategy and financial analysis.

He is a non-executive director at the Investor Protection Board, where he chairs the investment committee.

Bgoni is a chartered accountant with over 19 years international experience in the financial and public sectors.

He holds, among other qualifications, a Bachelor of Accounting Science from the University of South Africa and a Master's in Applied Finance from Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand.

Notable previous appointments for Bgoni included being a management consultant at McKinsey Incorporated and chief financial officer at New Zealand Stock Exchange.

The conference is being held under the theme Fostering Zimbabwean Capital Markets for Sustainable and Responsible Investments: Opportunities for Investments.

The other speakers include chairperson of the REIT Association Mike Juru, Association of Stockbrokers in Zimbabwe secretary general Arnold Chibvongodze, Investment Professional Association of Zimbabwe vice-president Ranga Makwata, director-general Zimbabwe Association of Pension Funds Sandra Muzevenzo and director Trustees Services Kreston Zimbabwe Christinah Machingambi.

The conference is expected to draw delegates from across different sectors, including the REITS association, executives from the private sector and state-owned enterprises, stockbrokers, the Association of Asset Managers Zimbabwe, Bond Market Association of Zimbabwe, the Association of Custodians, listed companies executives' and ZAPF-Pension Fund Trustees among others.

Last week, the ZSE said it will launch a capital markets association during the conference.

In an interview last week, Bgoni said the conference sought to position the country’s capital markets for investments opportunities.

"One of the key highlights for the ZSE at the conference will be the launch of the Capital Markets Association of Zimbabwe," Bgoni said.

"The aim of the association is to promote the development, integrity, and sustainability of Zimbabwe's capital markets by fostering collaboration, advocating for industry interests, and upholding professional standards to enhance market efficiency and investor confidence."

Bgoni said the launch of the association will usher in growth opportunities for industry development and enhancing market integrity and transparency.

"The conference will bring together all the players in the capital markets to discuss pertinent issues that will grow our sector. The delegates within the capital and financial market sector that will be present will assist in formulating strategies to deepen our market," the ZSE chief said.

"As the ZSE, this conference is important for us as it is a forum where we get a better understanding from the different market players on the issues that affect them as participants as well issues that affect the whole investment climate in Zimbabwe."

Bgoni added that it was the ZSE's hope that the conference would also come out with tangible solutions to any issues tabled at the conference. He said the conference is a networking opportunity for the market, also providing opportunities to update delegates on the activities being undertaken by the exchange as well as the projects in the pipeline.

"The conference will also provide an opportunity to share best practice standards. The discussions will also aid in policy influence as we will also have the key decision makers from the government and Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion,” Bgoni said.

“By convening as market players, we will be able to position the capital markets as the driver for sustainable economic development."
