The Zimbabwe ladies golf team led by captain and veteran golfer Batsirai Tilowakuti is one of the 20 countries taking part in the 16th edition of the All-Africa Challenge Trophy currently underway at the Tazegzout Golf Club in Agadir in Morocco.
Inform top teenage golfer Miriam Masiya, who has won three tournaments in the last three months on the local ladies’ amateur golf scene, is also part of the three-member team which also include US – bound golfer Kudzai Mandava.
Tilowakuti and Mandava were part of the team that finished fifth at biennial competition at the Dar Es Salaam Gymkhana Golf Club in Tanzania in 2022.
They will be hoping to use that experience to propel Zimbabwe to a better performance this time around.
Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Union (ZLGU) president Olivia Nyamwanza is also in Morocco with the team.
The All Africa Challenge Trophy began on Wednesday with the flag raising ceremony before teeing off in earnest yesterday and will conclude tomorrow.
Some of the teams that will be taking part include 14 – time champions South Africa, who are overwhelming favourites to win the tournament as well as Angola, Ghana, Egypt, Nigeria, Tunisia, Kenya, Botswana, Côte d’Ivoire, Namibia and hosts Morocco among many others.
In the tournament, each country fields a team of three players, competing under the Eisenhower scoring system, where the best two scores per round contribute to the daily team score in the 54-hole stroke play format.
The AACT golf championship that debuted in 1992 and the first edition was organized by the Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Union at Chapman Golf Club in Harare.
