A 32-YEAR-OLD Filabusi man was slapped with a 16-year jail term after being convicted of raping a visually impaired woman.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe on June 28, the complainant, who is visually impaired and lives alone, retired to bed at around 8pm and forgot to lock the door.
The court heard that the complainant was later awakened by noise at the door as the accused (name withheld) was breaking in.
The accused grabbed the victim by the neck and raped her once.
The court heard that the suspect fled immediately after committing the offence.
The complainant screamed for help and her nephew, who lives nearby went to assist.

The victim’s nephew then alerted members of the neighbourhood watch committee, who tracked footprints, which led to the accused man’s place of residence, leading to his arrest.
