Jamie Carragher has faced criticism after he appeared to play down the significance of the Africa Cup of Nations when discussing Mohamed Salah's chances of winning the Ballon d'Or.
Speaking after Salah scored his 30th goal of the season during Liverpool's win over Manchester City on Sunday, Carragher said that Salah's failure to rank highly in previous Ballon d'Or years — his highest finish was fifth in 2019 — might have something to do with him "not playing in a major (international) tournament".
Carragher was challenged on his comment by Micah Richards and Daniel Sturridge who were in the Sky Sports studio on Sunday, and he was also called out on X by former Aston Villa and Egypt player Ahmed Elmohamady.
"Jamie Carragher doesn’t know what Major Tournaments is because he never won one," Elmohamady wrote. "AFCON is A Major Tournament. So proud to won it twice."
