Zimbabwe rower, Micheen Thornycroft kept her medal hopes at the 2016 Rio Olympics alive, when she charged into the single sculls semi-finals after finishing second in her heat yesterday.

Thornycroft finished behind Erichsen Fie Udby of Denmark and ahead of Canada’s Zeeman Carling, who also qualified for the semis, which are on today.
Swimmer, Sean Gunn came second in heat two of the men’s 100-metre free style event, but did not qualify for the next stage.
Also trying to keep her medal hunt on track is swimming star Kirsty Coventry, who will compete in the 200m backstroke heats tomorrow.
The semi-finals and the finals will be held on Friday, where Coventry hopes she will be involved after she failed to make it into the 100m backstroke finals.
The 200m backstroke is Coventry’s best event and Zimbabwe will be looking forward to seeing her do well in what is her last Olympics participation.
Coventry took to social media to drum up support for herself ahead of the race.

“I wanted to make it to the finals in the 100m backstroke tonight, but didn’t. I have to remind myself that I came 11th in the world at my fifth Olympics and I have always represented Zimbabwe, my friends and family to the best of my ability.
“Please keep up the support as I race #JustOneMore on [August 11 and 12] in my favourite event – the 200m backstroke,” she wrote on her Facebook page yesterday.
