INTERNATIONAL Master Rodwell Makoto is set to represent Zimbabwe at the FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships 2024, taking place in New York City from December 26 to 31 this month.

This historic event marks the first time the championships will be held in North America, set against the iconic backdrop of Wall Street.

Makoto returns from a remarkable performance at the 45th Chess Olympiad, where his contributions were pivotal in securing a silver medal for the Zimbabwean team.

As the world’s top chess players gather in the heart of global finance, the upcoming competition promises to deliver an exhilarating experience for both participants and spectators.

The fast-paced formats of Rapid & Blitz chess require quick decision-making and exceptional mental endurance, making them favourites among players.

This is not Makoto’s first encounter with elite competition.

He is no newcomer to facing the world’s best, having previously represented Zimbabwe at two FIDE World Cup tournaments: Baku, Azerbaijan in 2023 and Sochi, Russia in 2021.

Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF) communications and public relations director Agab Dozva expressed his enthusiasm, stating: “I am looking forward to IM Rodwell Makoto’s positive performance against the world’s best, considering the blazing form he has displayed recently at the 45th World Chess Olympiad. His participation will serve as a great inspiration for the youngsters back home.”

Adding to the excitement, December 29 will feature a free day dedicated to Chess Davos, an exclusive conference exploring the intersection of chess and finance, further enriching the event’s allure.

“This is a unique opportunity for chess to shine in such a prestigious setting,” said ZCF president Todd Mapingire.

“We are proud to support Rodwell as he competes among the best in the world, showcasing the talent and potential of Zimbabwean chess on an international stage.”

The event will kick off with the Rapid Championship from December 26 to 28, followed by a day off on December 29.

The Blitz Championship will resume on December 30 and 31.
