ZIMBABWE looks set to win this year’s edition of the Confederation of Schools Sport Association of Southern Africa (Cossasa) Games, with early results yesterday showing the locals ahead in medals haul.
The games are being held in Bulawayo, with White City hosting athletics, netball and volleyball, while football is being played at Gifford.
Northlea School is hosting basketball, while St Columba’s is home to handball matches.
Arab Chimuchembere crossed the finishing line in 10:66 to claim gold in the boys’ Under-17 100m race, with compatriot Muza Takomborerwa right on his heels in 10:92 to get silver, while Eswatini got bronze through Amahle Magogo, who managed 11:15.
Zimbabwe also dominated in the girls’ Under-17 category, where Shalom Sendi took gold in 12:21, followed by Kimberly Chivi, who grabbed silver in 12:43, with bronze going to Zambia’s Ruth Chanda (12:69.)
Praise Muererwa of Zimbabwe snatched gold in the girls’ Under-16 100m sprint in a time of 12:81 followed by colleague PraiseGod Nyamulepa in 12:98 and Zimbabwe also took the bronze through Primrose Chidembo in 13:40.
Panashe Hondoma of Zimbabwe won gold in the boys’ 3 000m race in 9:04:56, with Eswatini getting silver through Muzi Mavimbela in 9:04:95 and bronze going to Zambia in 9:09:99.
Eswatini got gold in the girls’ Under-15 800m race with Lihle Simelane crossing the line in 2:22:66, narrowly beating Zimbabwe’s Evernice Goriyati who finished in 2:22:73 in a race thatZimbabwe also claimed the bronze.

Zimbabwe’s Courage Maposa grabbed gold in the boys’ Under-15 800m race, crossing the finishing line in 2:10:14, with compatriot Tawanda Mabhiza getting silver in 2:14:39.
In the same race, Eswatini’s Mazwi Masango took bronze in a time of 2:17:63.
In what was a closely contested event in the boys’ Under-17 800m event, local boy Tatenda Maulidi shot to victory to get gold at a time of 1:58:43, with Zambia’s Jones Sikaona, the silver medallist, finishing in 1:59:79, while Zimbabwe got bronze with Gift Khumalo in 2:00:31.
Purity Kusararakwetsanga of Zimbabwe won gold in the girls’ Under-17 800m race in 2:23.19, followed closely by Zambia’s Charity Moonga, who crossed the line in 2:24:29, and Zimbabwean Chipochashe Manyonga, who got the bronze in 2:28:70.
Other disciplines have their finals being played today when the closing ceremony of the games will be held at White City Stadium.
