THE chairperson of the Zimbabwe Women Soccer League, Theresa Maguraushe, has acknowledged the efforts of her predecessors and the pioneers of the game, after the association attracted a historic sponsorship worth US$320 000 from The Heart Group, spearheaded by its leader Walter Magaya.
Maguraushe, a highly respected administrator in charge of development for most of her career, recognised several pioneers, including former board members Pauline Matute, Faith Mpaso, Barbara Machawira, Otillia Ngurande and Cecilia Malinga for their efforts in shaping the game. She also reserved special mention for Harvison Masilela (New Orleans), Steven Rutsito (Mufakose), Kawera (Eastern Region), Alice Mambinge (Bindura Queens), Mbuya Ofumbwa (St Mary’s Queens) and Tamba Munemo (Cyclone Stars).
“We celebrate their legacy as we embrace this new era of growth and opportunity. The historic sponsorship is a testament to the power of women’s football and we’re committed to continuing the trailblazers’ work, empowering future generations and propelling the sport forward,” Maguraushe said.
“As we launch this overwhelming sponsorship, let us emulate our partner for placing his heart on the most exciting game of women’s football. This should not be the end, but the beginning of a brighter future for women’s football and the girl child.”
First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa, in a speech delivered by Primary and Secondary Education deputy minister Angeline Gata, lauded The Heart Group’s sponsorship as a game-changer for football in Zimbabwe, emphasising the much-needed financial support for revitalising women’s football.
Sports, Arts and Recreation deputy minister Emily Jesaya reiterated her ministry’s commitment to promoting an inclusive sporting environment, emphasising the remarkable achievements of Zimbabwe’s female athletes at the international level.
Magaya pledged more support, outlining the details of the sponsorship, which includes two sets of uniforms for each of the 16 teams in the Heart League and funding of the inaugural 16-team knockout tournament.
“We are here just to give a small hand that we can in sport and, in particular, women football. We are going to do more if we are allowed to spread our tentacles.” Magaya said

Notable dignitaries in attendance included Energy and Power Development deputy minister Yeukai Simbanegavi, Sports ministry chief acting director Eugenia Chidhakwa, Sports and Recreation Commission director-general Eltah Nengomasha and Zimbabwe Olympic Committee chief executive Marlene Gadzirayi, among others.
Additionally, representatives from Zifa, including the normalisation committee’s Rosemary Mugadza and chief executive officer Yvonne Manwa, as well as the Premier Soccer League leadership attended the event.
