LOCAL football clubs will observe a minute of silence before their weekend Castle Lager Premier Soccer League matches in honour of the legendary Warriors, Dynamos and Gunners striker Norman Maroto, who died in early yesterday after a short illness.
Maroto died at age 40 and was the last striker to score more than 20 league goals in a season while playing for Gunners.
Log-leaders FC Platinum are among a host of Premier Soccer League clubs to send condolence messages to Maroto’s family and the football fraternity as they head to Gweru, where they clash with TelOne at Bata tomorrow.
“FC Platinum is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Norman Maroto, who was not only a colleague, but also a beloved brother and friend to many of us. Throughout his time at FC Platinum, his presence shone brightly within our team,” a statement by FC Platinum read.
“His commitment both on and off the field embodied the unity and passion that FC Platinum upholds. Norman’s invaluable contributions to football will serve as a lasting inspiration for future generations of players in Zimbabwe.
“As we gather to honour his life, let us cherish the happiness and humour he brought into our lives. Rest in peace, Norman. You will be greatly missed, but always remembered. The entire FC Platinum family extends heartfelt condolences to the Maroto family and the entire football community.”
Ambitious Simba Bhora, sitting on position four on the table, are home to ZPC Kariba today and they will be honouring Maroto as well.
“You may have retired from football, but your spirit and determination will always be remembered. RIP Norman Maroto,” Simba Bhora said.

Highlanders, who head to Heart Stadium in Harare, for a date with Yadah, expressed deep sadness and will have the former Warriors striker in their thoughts.

Norman was a phenomenal gunslinger who left an indelible footprint on the Zimbabwean football landscape.”

The PSL said: “It is with deep sadness that we learnt of the untimely passing of a legendary football player and esteemed football administrator, Norman Maroto. We extend our deepest condolences to the Maroto family, friends, FUZ and the entire football family.”
Zifa also added their voice.
“It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we extend our sincere condolences on the passing of Norman Maroto, a cherished member of the Zimbabwe football family,” the national football body said.
“Norman’s contribution to Zimbabwean football was immense and profound. As a player, he graced the pitch with exceptional talent, earning admiration and respect from fans and peers alike.
“His transition into a football administrator further showcased his dedication to the sport, and his work with the Footballers Union of Zimbabwe was marked by a steadfast commitment to the welfare of players and the growth of football in our nation.”
